MEC participated in preparatory meeting for CRES+5
A representative of the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) took part in the preparatory meeting that organizes the Regional Conference on Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (CRES+5) in Cordoba, Argentina, on March 22 and 23, 2023. The ministerial-level event with a high political profile will take place between March 13 and 15, 2024, in Brasilia.
The preparatory meeting brought together representatives from the region’s university networks, government representatives, national rectors’ councils, quality assurance agencies, teaching and non-teaching staff unions, student organizations and regional and international organizations. From Brazil, representatives of the National Union of Students (UNE) and the National Association of Graduate Students (ANPG) were also present.
At this pre-Conference meeting, the members from Latin America and the Caribbean approved the CRES+5 agenda and defined the thematic axes and methodology to ensure the participation of all the actors involved in the issue. The MEC is represented by Jaqueline Pinheiro Schultz, general coordinator of International Affairs for Higher Education, Brazil.
The preparatory meeting is organized by the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO-IESALC), the National University of Córdoba, the National Interuniversity Council, the Ministry of Education of Argentina and the Latin American and Caribbean Higher Education Area (ENLACES).
Conference – With the event being held in the federal capital, it is expected that there will be a massive presence of the higher education community, members of state governments and Brazilian universities. The Conference will also be an opportunity to disseminate the new public policies of the current MEC administration to other countries and to strengthen dialogue with all the players in higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean.
CRES+5 – As a result of the 3rd Regional Conference on Higher Education (CRES 2018), held in Cordoba in 2018, a commitment was made to hold a follow-up meeting five years later, CRES+5. The proposal is to promote a participatory process to highlight the progress made, as well as the challenges that remain and emerging issues, particularly in the post-pandemic phase.
At CRES 18, an action plan was created with some guidelines, including: the strategic role of higher education in the sustainable development of Latin America and the Caribbean; higher education, cultural diversity, interculturality, internationalization and regional integration in Latin America; scientific and technological research and innovation as a driver of human, social and economic development for Latin America and the Caribbean; and teacher training.
More information on the thematic axes is available on the UNESCO website.
